Kinnear on his own as players get day off

The debacle at Newcastle United shows no sign of coming to an end as Joe Kinnear found an empty training ground on his first official day as interim manager.

The former Wimbledon, Luton Town and Nottingham Forest boss was expected to begin work on reviving the team's fortunes after five consecutive defeats, but arrived on Monday to discover the squad had been given the day off.

It is the latest in a catalogue of stunning developments on Tyneside as the club lurches from one disaster to another.

PETALING JAYA: Federal Territory PAS Youth has been slammed for calling for a ban on the upcoming concert by popular Canadian rocker Avril Lavigne, with Malaysian Artistes’ Association (Karyawan) describing the move as “ridiculous”.

Its president Freddie Fernandez criticised the move, saying: “This is the most ridiculous thing to do – to ask for a cancellation of such a decent performer like Avril Lavigne.

“Avril's music is very popular here. PAS Youth should never deprive Malaysians of the chance to watch the concert.”

The concert has been set for Aug 29 at Stadium Merdeka.
Fernandez said PAS Youth was trying to impose their narrow values on the country, forgetting that Malaysia is a multicultural nation.

“PAS Youth should really take a good look at themselves and examine whether what they are doing is correct,” he said.

“Their narrow-mindedness will definitely not get the support of the rakyat. They are always looking at the world through blinkers. They cannot see any other point of view except theirs.”

He said Karyawan would be calling for a meeting with all concert promoters to have a stand once and for all to ask for the Government not to entertain ridiculous requests and demands of such unreasonable people.

On Saturday, Federal Territory PAS Youth chief Kamaruzaman Mohamed handed over a memorandum to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Hakim Borhan and the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry calling for a ban on the concert.

The PAS wing is asking the authorities to ban the show because “rock and punk is not suitable for the young generation and especially so during Merdeka month.”
Galaxy Group spokesman said the rocker would comply with regulations here during her concert.

“There is absolutely no problem with her image, costumes and showmanship,” he added.

“Avril’s management is aware of this and they have told us to handle the issue properly,” he said.

Status Update : I've just moved my stuff (i.e: backpack) into my awesome new office, and I am just lovin' it thus far. Awesome air conditioning, awesome PC, and surprise surprise, the previous owner actually installed Championship Manager 08 here. Saucy.

Voon Chee's mood is : Ecstatic. Totally loving the privacy and awesome air-conditioning.

Normally I'd put this under "10 Things" unfortunately, I have neither the patience, nor the brainpower (at the moment) to come up with another 8 things. So here goes,
TWO things you wish you didn't know today.

1) Think about it for a second; we live in a country where abuse of political power, corruption, and under-the-table dealings run rampant (in plain public view no less)... but over the last month or so all eyes and ears in the country are focused on the one topic of "buttsecks". Thats right "buttsecks". Only in Malaysia could the heinous crime of committing "buttsecks" come under so much public scrutiny, involving some of the biggest names in the Malaysian political scene, no less. Only in Malaysia could someone (Saiful) gain national recognition (albeit as the guy who got 'F'ed in the A' 8 times before reporting it) for.... "buttsecks". Only in Malaysia, can the career (and life) of a former Deputy Prime Minister be threatened (twice)... by "buttsecks". And only in Malaysia can any of the front five pages of all major newspapers consistently, for a week, carry the theme of "buttsecks".

So here's to "buttsecks" (or sodomy, for those who still haven't figured it out), which (consensual or not) when caught, can land a person in jail for up to 20 years..... for "buttsecks".

2) The blogger of Malaysia Today known as Raja Petra Kamaruddin may have the biggest, strongest, politically defiant pair of balls in Malaysia.

6) When it rains in Malaysia, it f**kin POURS.... but somehow it still manages to be hot.

Anyone who knows me well enough will tell you i'm probably the least politically informed person in my age-group. To be frank, I find the politics here to be (or used to be anyway) dry, predictable and without the same appeal that American politics seems to have for me (George W. said WHAT!?)....

So it's got to be pretty freakin' worrying when I tell you, now, that the politics in this country has just stepped into to threshold of the absurd. To quote someone I overheard, "Politics in Malaysia has become the laughing stock of the world." Indeed.

Lets review:-

1) The MB of Kedah refuses to back down on his decision to log the Ulu Muda forest reserve in Kedah. [quote] Azizan told his critics that they should not be too obsessed with caring for the environment "like parents who are extremely obsessed with their offspring". [/quote]..... despite protests from Environmental Organizations, the Chief Minister of Penang and the general public, with concerns that such action would seriously affect the water supply of the Muda dam (which Penang draws 80% of its supply from). Not to mention the overall environmental consequences....

2) Former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has taken up refuge in the Turkish embassy over fears for his personal safety. This come about just two days after reports alleging the Anwar had supposedly sodomised a 23 year old aide of his SO BAD that the boy was hospitalised..... OHMYGOD. Which leads me to believe two things, (a) if Anwar is indeed being set up, they sure aren't being very creative about it
(b) to be HOSPITALIZED? Is Anwar hung like a f**king horse? Is he lying face-down on his hospital bed too?

... It wouldn't quite be me if I forget to mention exactly how much of a dumbass this kid is. Consider.

3) Anyone who lives in the area just outside the Kelana stadium would agree with me here:- the government were seriously p*ssing themselves here over the predicted "one million" who would show up for the rally. Which resulted in a series of roadblocks in and around the area which in all honestly displayed the worst cases of racial profiling by a local authority I've seen in recent time. I shan't elaborate. Anyway, 10,000 show up for the rally and all goes without incident... or so we thought.

5) Germany and Spain in the final is a matchup that is SO hard to predict, not because any particular reasons other than both teams are so obviously deficient in respective areas that you wondered how they even made it this far in the first place!

Just some random comments of the bits & pieces of matches I've been able to catch over the last week or so

France v Romania (0 - 0)
An utter SNORE FEST with neither side showing the ability or any real desire to score the first goal. Tactically Romania were very sound at the back, coping well with the Anelka and Ribery, if you can really call that 'coping'. Truth be told, France seemed to be just lacking when it comes to Anelka holding the ball up for the midfield to come back him up, and when they DO manage to advance the ball, there just seems a lack of flair (really, with Makelele and Toulalan in midfield, you can't argue with that). Ribery is wasted on the wing while Malouda continues to dumbfound me as to why Domenech and Grant continue to include him in starting 11s. Romania look to be the dark horses of this 'group of death'. Solid at the back, and certainly capable of getting the odd goal at the other hand, they could possibly go far if they do make it to the knockout stages.

Holland v Italy (3-0)
Possibly the biggest match of the Euros so far, and certainly disappoint (if you're a Oranje fan). The Dutch put on a absolute showcase of counterattacking football at it's best with Sneijder netting what has been to me the goal of the tournament thus far. Also, while many pointed out at the time how Ruud Van Nistelrooy was fortunate to score what was a blatantly offside goal... I digress. Why? Pannuci was lying behind the goal, still in active play and thus... playing him onside. Perfectly legitimate goal and you can look it up if you believe otherwise.

First goal aside, the Dutch were good value for their win, often dominating the midfield battle (against Pirlo and Gattuso no less) with the Italians just unable to cope with the Oranje movement and the constant harassment of Dirk Kuyt. The Azzuri on the other hand need to figure out what went wrong tactically in midfield as well as get the ball to Luca Toni a little faster and easier. The man was struggling to cope with the Dutch 'defense' and was clearly frustrated by the middle of the second half. Del Piero did come on to some effect, but a little too late to help the cause. Defensively they should be fine in other matches, being Italian and all...

Spain v Russia (4-1)
Unfortunately I missed the better portion of the 2nd half being asleep (hey, I saw Torres go off for Fabregas and I thought that was it) but boy did I miss a show. The David Villa show to be exact. Being already a HUGE fan of Villa (the man just oozes class) it's good to seem him have such an amazing start to the tournament, but undoubtedly, credit must be given to the likes of Torres (who the Russian defense had no answer to for 60 minutes) and Iniesta (ineffective in the midfield most of the time, but delivered the killer ball when it mattered).

As big as a win as the scoreline might suggest, it has to be taken with a pinch of salt if you're Spanish. While the spanish ran riot in the final third they really struggled in midfield and were never really tested in defense. The midfield diamond of Silva, Penna, Iniesta and Xavi while managing to defend adequately enough, just seemed to lack going forward. Silva looked lost playing in a narrow role, Penna was sitting back 90% of the time, and Xavi didn't seem to get nearly enough of the ball to do what he does best at Barca. Perhaps the introduction of Cesc or maybe even wingers will help the cause. The Russians on the other hand, have a LONG way uphill if they even have a chance of making it out of this group, but you know they always have a chance when Guus Hiddink's around.

Pre-match
Portugal go into Euro 08 as probably one of the favourites to win this one. Especially considering how they lost the last Final to Greece, this is pretty much a redemption mission for the men in red and green. Speaking of which, its a pretty classic Portugal formation, 4-5-1 with Nuno Gomes the skipper as the lone striker with Ronaldo and Simao supporting on the wings. Turkey line up with a very Euro-esque 4-2-2-2 formation, skippered by Emre who will undoubtedly be their focal point in attack.

1st Half
A rather disappointing half from Portugal's perspective in the sense that they didn't really impose their will on the game as I predicted they would. From the get go you could see that Big Phil's gameplan was to go straight to the wings to Ronaldo and Gomes and simply exploit the fullbacks and to good effect too. A couple of early runs by both really kept the Turks on their heels but other than that Portugal's only real threat was from set pieces.

On a slightly sour note, we HAVE to take notice of the constant diving by the Turks right from the kickoff. I mean, its one thing to dive in a match, but to actually have it on your GAMEPLAN to be constantly diving throughout is just pathetic, really.

Highlights of the first half would probably be Pepe having a header from a corner (rightly) disallowed for offside. Unlucky, but definitely the right call from the linesman. Also, Ronaldo probably had the chance of the half when he sent a swerving cross-shot across goal from the left and with keeper Volkan at full stretch, just barely able to tip it against the post.

At the Half
The Turks really need to get it together offensively. They're organized enough in defence and in midfield but upfront they really just seem lost at times, often resulting to falling over one another. (On that note, there was this weird moment in the first 10 minutes where Emre actually tackled his own striker... wonder what that was about?) Portugal on the other hand, just need to find that fluency outside of set pieces, and considering how many match winners they have in their line-up it could just be a matter of when they actually score. Here's an interesting stat, possession at the half:- Portugal (67%) Turkey (33%)

2nd Half
We start the half with Turkey making a substitution and reverting to a 4-5-1 *groan* and its Portugal who come out flying. Excellent movement and good use possession, and notice they're actually moving the ball around alot faster and more efficiently. Credit to Deco for running things. A MASSIVE slip-up defensively sees Gomes nip in ahead of the defense to unfortunately hit the outside of the post. They finally get the breakthrough in the 61st minute through Pepe, with a brilliant burst all the way from the back, gets the ball in midfield, plays a one-two with Gomes and just the calmest of finishes. Brilliant stuff, Portugal 1-0 up and coasting.

The rest of the half basically turns into a Portugal scrimmage. I mean, Turkey have done better in terms of retaining possession in midfield but up front they're still a mess, now instead of diving, they're fouling defenders left and right. Portugal on the other hand begin to really turn the screw as they search for the 2nd. Gomes can count himself unlucky after hitting the post again. At this point it's basically an attacking exhibition for Portugal as you see the full extent of their offensive brilliance, excellent movement, quick ball movement, direct running from the wings.

It unfortunately gets really ugly late in the game, as Aurelio just dives in for this GHASTLY two footed tackle on him. Now personally, I don't like Nani, and to see him rolling around in pain just excites me in ways you can only imagine... but this was just a horrid tackle from the Turk. Straight red, no questions asked, but somehow goes unnoticed by the ref (I can understand though, cause when I see Nani rolling on the ground I automatically assume he dived)

Portugal do eventually get their 2nd into stoppage time as Turkey push forward good recognition by Ronaldo to spot the run of Joao Moutinho from the middle who unselfishly gives it up to Meireles for the nice finish.

At the whistle :
Thoroughly entertaining match, albeit a little one-sided for my liking. The result was never really in doubt (which really makes me regret not putting money on Portugal!) simply 'cause Turkey just lack any real quality up front to challenge the very impressive Pepe and Carvalho.

Man of the Match :
The papers will probably give it to Pepe, you know, for scoring the goal and not conceding and all that, but I have to give props to my main man Deco for just being that class act in midfield, keeping everyone in check, and making the most out of his attacking option. So its a two way tie.

Moan of the Match :
Ties seem to be the flavour of the moment so this one's actually a 3-way tie. One would be the constant diving, two would be that horror-tackle on Nani, three is kinda a pet peeve of mine, cause this one goes out to new Chelsea signing, Bosingwa and his monobrow.

Pre-Match
What can I say? This is probably the most excited I've been about an international tournament since I (correctly) predicted England would crash out on penalties in the quarter finals in the last World Cup. No, really, I did. Just ask anyone who listened. Anyway, both teams line up looking to get a result in the opening fixture, 1976 winners the Czech Republic line-up 4-5-1 with the giant Jan Koller up front whereas the co-hosts Switzerland line up 4-4-2 skippered by Alexander Frei (who's been out most of last season injured)

1st Half
After a rather cagey few opening minutes the Swiss decide to take the initiative to the Czechs and just start bombarding the Czech area with crosses, though well dealt by the backline. Neither side seriously threatened throughout the opening half with the Swiss just seemingly lacking that cutting edge in dangerous areas showing a real lack of ideas when it comes to making chances.

Good solid moves from the Czechs throughout although they seem to repeatedly break down when the ball gets to Jan Koller. Hmm... I guess thats what you get for putting a freaking pillar in football boots and putting him as the focal point of your offense. C'mon! The man's on his last legs, there is NO WAY he's mobile enough to be the lone striker anymore. Give him some support. One major bonus though was the Czech midfield with glimpses of class, although ultimately let down by a poor touch by Koller... blech. Moment of the first half? Alexander Frei sending a stinging 25 yarder right at Petr Cech.... before ultimately having to leave the game after hurting his left knee.

At The Half
I'm actually regretting coming to the computer and missing the halftime analysis? Considering I haven't had a dose of Shebby Singh in over 8 months I've almost forgotten how (very very) entertaining Mr. Singh can be. Heh, there is hope yet for Malaysian commentary. You go Shebby!

2nd Half
Hakan Yakin comes on after the interval for the injured skipper and slips into the playmaker role just behind the main striker... also known as the 'Paul Scholes role' (can we still call it that?) On a slightly unrelated note, I am a HUGE FAN of Hakan Yakin, in my (very) biased opinion, probably the best left footer in the Pro Evolution series. (Yeah, had to get that off my chest) An absolutely inspired substitution as the Swiss come out all guns ablazing to start the half, the highlight being Yakin sending a free kick JUST over from about 27m. (But I'd be lying if I didn't mention that Cech always had it covered) About 10 minutes in and its clear that Hakan Yakin is really pulling the strings in this game.

We finally get the opener in the 70th minute after the Swiss defense fail to re-line their offside trap fast enough following a corner. Beautifully flighted ball over the defence and a fantastic finish with the outside of the boot by the substitute Sverkos for his first international goal. Undeserved for the Czechs but impressive nonetheless. The Swiss almost manage to equalize aroudn the 80th minute as Vonlathen hits the post as all hell breaks loose in the Czech penalty box. Good save though by Cech on a shot by Barnetta. And a RIDICULOUS appeal for a handball by the Swiss. Really? REALLY?

Ultimately though, the Swiss just can't find the right combination and fall in their opening match against the Czechs, who can really count themselves lucky after really just snatching the result.

At the whistle :
Czech Republic - 3.5 (out of five) stars
The Czechs need to sort themselves out going forward. I mean, the defense is solid enough, and you're never gonna concede many with Cech between the sticks. The real issue here is the choice of formation. I mean the whole 60 minutes that Koller was on you could really tell that he's just not physically capable of being a lone striker anymore. Just the lack of ability to chase down loose balls, pressure the backline or do anything meaningful in build-up play means that 'that really-really-old-guy-missing-a-couple-teeth' needs to have a serious look at his tactics.

Switzerland - 3 stars
Although they were unlucky to get away with a point today you could sense a general lack of ideas going forward until Hakan Yakin came on. They're solid enough at the back and in midfield, but as long as Hakan Yakin gets to start the next match, they should be able to nick a goal or two against the likes of Turkey ... but probably not Portugal. It's a tough, uphill battle from here on for the co-hosts.

Man of the Match - Hakan Yakin
The supersub gets the nod for MoM after coming on after halftime and just completely taking control of the game. A couple of decent deliveries from free kicks and one swerving attempt from way out to cap off a very very decent performance off the bench. Look for him to start the next match.

I mean, Morello fans say what you want. No question, the man's a genius who invented a whole new way to play guitar... but I just CANNOT get over that little gay "i'm trying to be a rocker" hop he does from 0.30 to 0.35.

Also some interesting facts about the song : -
- It's RATM's first released single, WAAAAAAY back in '93.
- It has probably one of the most distinctive guitar solos you'll ever hear.
- All in all, the song has 9 lines of lyric (if you consider "ugh" to be a lyric)

Well I didn't actually follow up on my promise to start blogging (again). Yeah... one dull FA Cup Final and another heartbreaking Champions League Final... here we are. (Again)

Status Check (myself) : -
Lets see, I managed to clock in over 60 hours of gameplay in under a week (Final Fantasy VII - IMHO the greatest game ever created second only to X-Com), I'm wasting my brain away in the day time watching Family Guy and getting migraines at night from the constant flashbacks to my childhood.... yeah, THAT childhood. And I say that as if I'm that much older? I mean, c'mon, really. How much older can I be that I'm still playing RPGs? I'll leave that to the philosophers to answer.

Things to do : -
1) Fly back in 4 days
2) Find a way to kill time for 4 days
3) .... can't say I can think of anything else

Why? Because I suffer from chronic can't-plan-anything-more-than-a-day-ahead-itis. It's horrible, just horrible.

Rant Section : -
When I decided to revive this old address it made me wonder why I stopped in the first place. Well I know why I stopped anyway, just a lack of material I guess. But then I think of why everyone ELSE stopped. It's as if the whole blogging fad just died overnight (same way it was born). So when did blogging die? I suppose its the moment that bloggers like XiaXue and Steven go on a blind date... the only thing in common they share being that they're both bloggers... right...
